What is VMware?

VMware is a virtual machine program that allows users to set up multiple virtual computers and to use one or more of these virtual machines simultaneously by using a hosting operating system, like Windows or Linux. For those that are not well-versed in computer terminology, the VMware Workstation allows one physical computer to run multiple operating systems at the same time. Other VMware programs can allow these virtual computers to be used across a network.

Along with allowing multiple operating systems to be run simultaneously, VMware is also able simulate the performance of certain pieces of computer hardware. For instance, a CD-ROM drive can be simulated by having the information converted to an ISO file and having it “mounted” in a virtual drive. The virtual drive will then read the information just as a physical CD-ROM drive reads a CD.

Another tangible benefit of using VMware is its ability to take periodic snap shots of each separate operating system that is being used under its umbrella. This is a valuable resource for software testers because it means that the operating system can be “rolled back” to remove a piece of software that has caused system instability. This allows for much more rapid software testing because it prevents the long restoration time usually required to wipe an operating system clean and restore all necessary software.

VMware software has helped people and businesses and services save money because it removes the need for multiple computers to run multiple operating systems. Consultants say this allows for one physical machine to double or triple its usefulness.
